Commentary | Two different scenes:
In the foreground, the priest, the barber and Cardenio discover Dorotea (in man clothes), who is washing her feet into a stream. In the background, Sancho tries to convince don Quixote to leave Sierra Morena. Basic and conventional composition, but enriched with Coypel´s bucolic and galant style. Drawing and engraving are acceptable as a whole, but deficient in some details. |
Notes | 1 - Plate VIII; wrongly-placed in tome II, part II, book V, chap. X; it should appear in tome I, part I, book IV, chap. XXVIII.
2 - Surrounded by a strong line enclosing underneath a space for inscription, which however has been left blank. 3 - Copy after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1735-38). 4 - Probably, the copy has been done after the plate for Paris/La Haye: Chez Bleuet, 1774, which has a similar frame and underneath space but with caption. 5 - The plate is not signed. |
